High Top Van

If you are looking for one of the most versatile van types on the market, then a high top van is ideal.

The high top makes a perfect candidate for conversions and carrying bulk cargo.

A high top van may also be referred to as a raised roof sprinter.

What is a raised roof sprinter?

A raised roof sprinter or high top van is one of the most popular conversion vans on the market. They combine utility and luxury with options.

They are ideal family vehicles but can also be used for the transportation of goods.

Raised roof sprinters and high top vans come in a range of models, so it might take a while to find the one for you.

What are the benefits of a high top van?

If you are considering a high top van, then it is crucial you know some of the main benefits.

The most obvious benefit of a high top van is that there is plenty of headroom. So if you are a taller driver or are transporting taller people, then it is perfect.

The extra head clearance in a high top van makes the cabin feel big and roomy.

Due to that extra headroom clearance, it is generally easier to load and unload the vehicle.

Versatility

A high top van is well documented for being one of the most versatile vans on the market. Owners can choose the inside configuration and make changes as they see fit. It works for hauling large amounts of goods and several people.

This versatility works exceptionally well for those who do not wish to have multiple vehicles and want one vehicle that can do everything.

Entertainment

There are endless possibilities for entertainment in the vehicle too. High tops often have the capability, or a built-in version, of rear entertainment systems, charge cables, speakers and other options.

This makes high top vans an excellent option for long haul drives.

Bulk cargo

High top vans have a larger capacity for more oversized and more bulky items. The extra inches can give the high top van the edge over a regular-sized large van.

What is a pop-top van?

A pop-top roof allows the van to be a regular-sized van most of the time. Typically only adding a few inches. However, this also means the van can be driven around urban areas with a little more ease.

Pop-top roofs are also known as sleeping roofs, making the van an excellent option for travellers and families who like to explore via vehicle.

Long road trips are made more comfortable and roomy with a pop-top.

While pop-top vans can hold plenty of cargo, these high top vans are designed for campers and explorers.

What is a vertical elevating roof?

A vertical elevating roof is similar to a pop-top roof; however, the top is vertically positioned. It provides extra headroom for when you need to stand or cook.

These are usually breathable and can provide extra light with clear plastic windows.

Vertical rooves, much like pop-top roofs, are perfect for campers.

How to choose your high top van?

With so many options to choose from, it can be tricky to find the high top van that fits with what you need.

There is a range of features that make your high top van fit for purpose.

High Roof

If you are moving sizeable bulky cargo, then look for the highest possible, solid roof. While large vans have plenty of loadspace and payload capability, if you are moving large items, be sure you have measured the van internally.

Wheelbase

The bigger the wheelbase, the bigger the space you have to work with. A minor consideration is that the bigger wheelbase often makes the van less manoeuvrable in built-up urban areas.

Suppose you want to fit more inside the van or appreciate the space when you park your conversion van in your camping spot. Go for an extensive wheelbase.

Powertrain

High top vans, regardless of use, will need to carry the weight of the cargo. This is still a consideration for pop-tops, vertical tops, and other high tops designed for camping.

Look for a six-cylinder 4x4, as this will carry the weight with ease. But more importantly, when using high top vans for camping, you may encounter winding forest roads. The 4x4 will allow your van to navigate the terrain and weather conditions.

Location

Before you purchase your high roof van, a vital question is where you will be driving most often and where you will be storing it.

The smallest wheelbase on a large van is 144”, and this will fit in most parking spaces pretty easily. However, if you want to sleep and live in your van for short periods, you are more likely going to need the 170” wheelbase.

Passengers

Whether you choose a small van, large van or a high top van = a critical decision to make is how many seats you need.

The number of passengers that you are carrying will also impact the available load space. Adding as little as one row of seating can dramatically reduce what the van can take—factoring in foot space and proper fittings.

Seating may not only be added as extra rows; you may also choose to have functional comfort seating like tables and chairs.

Usage

High tops vans can be used for many different purposes. Since the interior is so versatile and conversion is easy, how you intend to use the vehicle will impact your choice.

How much time you will spend in the van itself should guide the initial trim that you choose. Typically there are several levels of trim - a mid edition is comfortable enough for most.

If the high top can is intended only for commercial purposes, you don’t have to pay as much attention to the ability to modify/add chairs.

If you use your high top van as a camping or travel van, carefully consider the available roofing options. Some roofing is better for cooking within the vehicle; others give better sleeping rooms.
