Vans come in all shapes and sizes. We all know that, however how does this apply to specifically Luton Van sizes? Well it depends on the reason for wanting to own or drive a Luton Van in the first instance and that age-old barometer, your budget..
Let’s firstly talk about the various Luton Van types and their respective sizes etc..
For those not in the know, a Luton is a van fitted with a large box on its back. It takes its name from the town of Luton, in Bedfordshire, where the Bedford commercial vehicle plant was originally located.
This van type offers great flexibility to accommodate your belonging due to the shape of its box. With a significant height advantage over standard long wheel base vehicles, a Luton or box van does not lose space over the wheel arches and also offers extra storage space directly above the driver cab. This can provide a possible payload of to 1,600kg. It is also very suitable to move heavy items as they can be fitted out with a tailback lift.
3.5 Tonne
Available for domestic and business use, an ideal removals van and popular for van hire, this size of van is popular for several reasons as it is easy to drive, can be driven with a basic car license and is the ideal vehicle for small removal jobs, moving home, house removals, bulky items such as a double bed, items of furniture, catering and exhibitions.
A standard short wheel base luton has an approximate internal volume of 600 cubic feet and the 3.5T fitted out with a 500kg tail-lift has an approximate internal volume of 600 cubic feet, an interior length of 10’5″ (3.2m) and overall length of 22.5ft / 6.9m.
Without a tail-lift the length is reduced to approximately 6.7m.
Available 3.5T options include a Tail Lift, load lock bars, tie rails and a reverse camera.
Vehicles in this group include the Citroen Relay Luton, Ford Transit Luton, Mercedes Sprinter Luton, Peugeot Boxer Luton, VW Crafter Luton, Renault Master Luton and Vauxhall Movano Luton.
Luton LWB
The Luton long wheel base van with tail lift gives you an extra 2-3 feet in length compared with the standard Luton van. Unfortunately it doesn’t allow for extra weight and reduces the payload to 1000KG.
Vehicles in this group include the Citroen Relay Luton, Ford Transit Luton, Mercedes Sprinter Luton, Peugeot Boxer Luton, VW Crafter Luton, Renault Master Luton and Vauxhall Movano Luton.
Luton Low Loaders
The Low loader provides a low alternative to the standard Luton with tail lift or dropwell. The Luton body is set lower than normal with a low entry height of 600mm and doesn’t have a tail lift, which means its easier to load quickly by stepping up into the loading area instead of having to operate a lift each time. This enables frequent loading and unloading without the need for a tail-lift and decreases physical strain on the user.
Important to note that as the overall van body is set lower the wheels intrude slightly into the loading area with wheel arches which can be covered over etc.
Vehicles in this group include the Peugeot Boxer Luton, Renault Master Luton & Vauxhall Movano Luton.
7.5 tonne
The 7.5 Tonne ‘Luton’ is the next size up from the Luton van is the 7.5 tonne box van which isn’t really a Luton Van but is often searched online as a ‘7.5 tonne Luton’ and has almost double the carrying capacity of a 3.5 ton luton van.
This Van has an internal length of 20ft or 6 Metres, an approximate internal volume of 1200 cubic feet, and comes with a tail lift able to lift a 1000 KG. Its full vehicles length is 30ft / 9.2m.
The 7.5 tonne box van can also be driven on a standard UK driving license with the category C1 which is given on most licences passed before 1997.
